Yeerongpilly Forum: The Housing Crisis & How We Get Out Of It

Seen your rent spike over the last few years? Struggling to save up for a deposit? Worried your kids won’t ever be able to buy a home?

You’re not alone. Our housing system is completely broken – rigged in favour of wealthy investors at the expense of everyday renters and first home buyers.

In the last 3 years, rents have spiked 43% and the median Brisbane house price has surged from $721,000 to $1,312,000, while mortgage repayments have soared as a result of successive rate hikes. Meanwhile we have less social housing per Queenslander now than when Labor came to power in 2015.

As a result, tens of thousands of people are one rent increase away from eviction, we’ve seen a massive increase in people sleeping in tents or in their cars, families are making enormous sacrifices to just service their mortgage, and for so many the prospect of buying their first home has become an impossible dream.

This housing crisis was not inevitable. It is the product of decades of Labor and the LNP intentionally turning housing into a source of profit, rather than a right. But there are solutions.

Join Greens MP for Griffith Max Chandler-Mather, Greens candidate for Miller, Liam Flenady and Greens candidate for Moreton Remah Naji for a community forum about how we got into this crisis, and the plan to get us out of it.
