The plan to tackle climate change

From the bushfires of 2019-20, to the devastating floods this year, it’s clear that climate change is here and Labor and the Liberal’s push to use public money to fund new coal and gas is making it worse. In fact Australia is the third biggest exporter of fossil fuels in the world, just behind Saudi Arabia and Russia.

The Greens have a comprehensive plan to phase out coal and gas, reduce emissions by 75% by 2030 and 100% by 2035. This plan will create a jobs and investment boom in new industries, expanded mineral mining and 100% renewable energy. Our plan also makes sure coal workers are supported throughout the transition, and invests in regional communities to develop new local industries.

Over the last 10 years, coal, oil and gas corporations have donated over $10 million dollars to Labor and the Liberals. In return these corporations have been given favourable decisions and $10 billion a year in subsidies.

The Greens will:

  • Build $65 billion in new publicly-owned renewables, storage and an upgraded grid – achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030
  • Slash energy prices by creating a new publicly-owned energy retailer that sells energy at cost
  • Institute an immediate moratorium on new coal and gas, phase out thermal coal and gas by 2030, and metallurgical coal by 2040
  • Expand mineral mining in rare earth minerals, lithium, copper and other metals crucial for renewable energy
  • Guarantee new employment for coal workers at existing pay rates for ten years
  • Establish a $2.8 billion Diversifying Coal Communities Fund to support locally developed transition plans for coal communities
  • Put an extra $25 billion into rail and bus services and $500 million per year into making cycling and walking safe and accessible and connecting people from the cities, to outer suburbs and regions with ease
  • Stop the massive subsidies to big coal, oil and gas corporations - over $10b each year and reinvest the money into the clean energy transition
  • Ban all political donations from the mining and resources sector (and other dirty industries) and cap all other donations at $1000 per year
