Tackling Youth Homelessness, Poverty and Social Isolation

The cost of living crisis is having a devastating impact on young people in our community and across Queensland. Right now there are more than 8,000 homeless young people in Queensland, and 1 in 5 Queensland children live in poverty. As rents skyrocket, young people under the age of 25 are the fastest growing population being forced into homelessness.

Labor has been in power in Queensland for 9 years, and they’ve totally failed to invest in proper early intervention, support services and rehabilitation for young people in poverty and facing disadvantage.

Instead, Labor has invested billions of dollars in prisons, and passed laws to suspend the human rights of Qld children, locking up and criminalising kids under the banner of being “tough on youth crime”. Not only has this done nothing to make our communities safer, but has deprived children of their basic human rights and dignity.

The Greens will do what actually works to ensure every young person in Queensland has what they need to live a good life and make our communities safer. Labor and the LNP’s solution - leaving kids in poverty, then locking them up, not only fails to prevent re-offending 96% of the time, but sets kids up for terrible adult lives.

If you want to hear about what works, come along to our free community forum to hear about how we’ll tax big corporations to fully fund public schools, decent housing, community building, mental health care, social support services and early intervention to stop offending before it happens. The bottom line is we can’t improve community safety with more of the same failed Labor LNP policies.

That’s why we’re hosting this free community meeting to talk about how we tackle youth homelessness, poverty and social isolation. Please join Max Chandler-Mather, your Federal MP for Griffith, Rebecca White, your Greens candidate for Greenslopes and some fantastic expert speakers (to be announced soon!) to talk about how we’ve got here, and what needs to come next.
