We are in the middle of one of the worst housing crises in Australia’s history, and I need your help. There’s a strong possibility that Labor will need the Greens to pass their housing plan through the Senate, and this gives us an important opportunity to push for real action on housing, one that we won’t get again for a long time.
Federal Labor’s ‘1 million homes” announcement is a complete con. Over the last five years the private market built 985,000 homes - Labor is just trying to claim credit for the status quo, which put us in this mess in the first place. The reality is Labor’s plan boils down to a commitment to subsidise the construction of just 20,000 public and community homes and 20,000 “affordable” homes over the next five years. This will literally see the situation get worse.
Here's where you come in. Come to our online briefing on our national housing campaign on Monday 14 November to learn more about how you can help tackle the housing crisis. We have a really important opportunity over the next few months to make Labor see just how important and urgent public and community housing is.
Because even if Labor does need the Greens to pass their ‘Housing Australia Future Fund’ bill (their public and community housing plan), our parliamentary power is often only as great as the people-powered movement in the community.
The Greens have announced that we will seek to negotiate significant improvements to Labor’s plan. We want to see Labor commit to:
- build 275,000 well designed public and community homes over the next five years, (instead of Labor’s 20,000)
- introduce a national 2 year rent freeze as part of new national tenancy standards, and
- invest $5 billion in maintenance and upgrades for existing public housing, to improve accessibility, energy efficiency, and ensure better heating and cooling
We have a genuine chance to secure these reasonable and urgently needed demands, but we know we won’t get anywhere without an enormous amount of public pressure.
We’ve got a plan to build a housing campaign Labor can’t ignore, but we need Greens branches and supporters around the country to get involved to pull it off.
If you think you’ll make it along, please RSVP here so we can send you through the Zoom link. Looking forward to sharing more about our campaign with you then.
