Pressure is building on the Labor Government to come to the table and work with the Greens on solutions that will actually tackle the scale of the housing crisis.
Right now Labor has two housing bills before Parliament, one that will drive up house prices and the other that will drive up rents. Given this, The Greens have said we can’t support these bills in their current form and last week delayed a vote until November, to give Labor 2 months to come to the table.
The Greens have said we’ll pass Labor’s bills, despite our concerns about them, IF they come to the negotiating able on some solutions that actually work: like scrapping negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount, mass building public housing, and stopping unlimited rent increases.
Despite saying they won’t negotiate with the Greens and initially trying to sink their own bills, Labor is this week investigating possible changes to the massive negative gearing and capital gains tax handouts for landlords. This is huge, and shows the pressure from our campaign is working.
I’m hosting an online town hall meeting next Tuesday 1 October at 6pm to give you an opportunity to hear more about these bills, to share any questions or concerns you have, and learn how we can build genuine pressure to win some real solutions.
RSVPs are essential! The Zoom link will be included in your confirmation email.
